Contemporary artist Tom Sachs has officially unveiled 31 Rue Cambon, an immersive exhibition transforming his studio at 245 Centre Street in New York City. The public installation recreates Chanel’s historic Parisian fashion house address using Sachs’ signature industrial, handmade aesthetic.
The storefront features cream awnings and interlocking double-C gates that open into an interior fitted with beige carpet, mirrored walls, and glass cases. Inside, 31 suits modeled after decades of Chanel looks line the walls, each constructed from three-quarter-inch plywood with paint dragged to replicate bouclé textures. Details throughout the space utilize hardware components, from a chandelier fitted with bicycle reflectors to slingback footwear built from cardboard and wood, alongside brooches styled with costume elements and LEGO bricks.
The project continues Sachs' decades-long practice of reinterpreting luxury branding through raw, functional materials, extending ideas first explored in his 1998 Chanel Guillotine (Breakfast Nook). By reproducing haute couture garments and retail architecture with hardware studio tools, the installation examines how visual luxury codes remain recognizable when stripped of traditional textiles.
