Shepard Fairey is bringing Filthy Lucre Ain’t Nothing New to CART Department in New York at 16 Morton Street, centering the show around a newly transformed 1937 Packard Touring Sedan.
Opening September 24, the exhibition marks the world premiere of "Untitled (Art Car)," which carries Fairey’s long-running mix of graphic propaganda, music history and social critique onto the body of the vintage car. Rendered in metallic gold, the Packard is split between two opposing ideas: wealth and opulence through hip-hop on one side and a critique of consumerism and power through punk on the other.
References to Slick Rick, Chuck D and The Notorious B.I.G. sit across from Joe Strummer, Jello Biafra and Jamie Reid, bringing together two musical worlds that have repeatedly surfaced throughout Fairey’s practice.
The show also includes new original artworks inspired by the car, original works and a playlist curated by Fairey around the artists represented in the piece. “Vehicles have become more than just modes of transportation, symbols of wealth or engineering marvels,” CART Department founder Larry Warsh said in a press statement. “They’ve become cars as canvas.”
Programming begins September 24 with a conversation between Fairey and Carlo McCormick, followed by When Rock Met Hip-Hop on September 25 moderated by Steven Blush with Janette Beckman, Eric Haze, Pete Nice and Drew Stone. The Hip-Hop Museum will present a final program on September 26 featuring Rocky Bucano, Grandwizzard Theodore and Eric Orr. RSVP for the full programming here.
