On September 19 and 20, Johnny Depp visited Shanghai’s Modern Art Museum to view his solo exhibition, *Johnny Depp: A Bunch of Stuff Presents Figures of the Fringe*, and attend special events. The appearance marked Depp’s first public appearance in China as an artist.
During his Shanghai visit, Depp recreated Bunnyman, a signature figure that runs through his visual world, at the exhibition. The character grew out of a childhood dream Depp has described and has continued to appear in his paintings and visual work, gradually becoming part of his personal artistic language. During the events, he also created artwork with children from remote mountain regions in southwestern China, using painting to forge an exchange across places and cultures.
At a September 20 gathering with visitors and the media, Depp spoke further about a creative practice spanning film, music, painting, and writing. Across these different mediums, characters, memories, and personal experiences continually become new threads for his work. *Johnny Depp: A Bunch of Stuff Presents Figures of the Fringe* likewise begins with these private fragments, bringing together the paintings, writing, and moving images he has created over decades.
Curated by Shai Baitel, the exhibition unfolds across five themes: “Heroes and Icons,” “Lovers and Muses,” “The First Shadows,” “Illusions,” and “Masks and Alter Egos.” Together, they place the recurring figures, imagery, and personal symbols in Depp’s work within a single visual narrative. *Johnny Depp: A Bunch of Stuff Presents Figures of the Fringe* opened on August 15 and runs through December 13.
