Partnering with the legendary footwear brand, the Philadelphia-based sneaker boutique has transformed the retro-leaning silhouette into a symbol of awakening, focusing on the metaphorical "moment of ignition" that acts as the driving force behind creative endeavors.
To ground the abstract narrative of ignition in physical construction, Lapstone & Hammer utilized a highly textured material palette. The GEL-Kayano 12.1 begins with an open diamond knit mesh upper, which is heavily overlaid with flint-like metallic silver panels and cream premium pebbled leather. The iconic ASICS tiger stripes receive a split, asymmetrical treatment, boasting black hairy suede on the lateral side and a contrasting cream premium suede on the medial profile. Adding another layer of tactile depth, the sneaker's tongue is constructed entirely from 100% cotton duck canvas.
The conceptual storytelling is most evident in the shoe's bold accents. Designed to emulate the seed of action spreading into a full flame, vibrant red hits on the visible GEL midsole and ASICS heel logo cut sharply through the otherwise neutral upper.
